TURTLE CONSERVATION

As the turtle population falls of drastically around the world, it is crucial to preserve these majestic creatures. There are many prime nesting sites on the beaches of North Sulawesi for as many as 5 species of marine turtle (Green Turtle, Olive-Ridley Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle and Leatherback Turtle). All are globally threatened with extinction and two are already critically endangered. Much beloved by the divers and eco-tourists in Bunaken Marine National Park when they are seen swimming in the sea, but also much beloved by the Minahasan people to have them cooking in the pot. All marine turtles are protected by national legislation in Indonesia, and Indonesia has signed up to International Treaties on their protection also. However this province still has challenges with cultural acceptance and law enforcement.
