Manado, The CapitaL of the province
In 1623, a French Cartographer made a world map and presented it to King Philippe of France. He placed Manado in his map at the bay area. Manado was originally two words “Mana” and “Rou”. These words are common words to point a far island. Mana rou simply means land in the far distance. These words was to address the perfectly cone shape island on the sea. Now this island is called Manado Tua. Before 1623, Manado was known by locals as Wenang. Then, during age of discovery Spaniards from the east and Portuguese sailors established their role in Manado. Dutch came and conquered the heart of the locals, not without fight though. Borgo is the name of Minahasa-Spanish/Portuguese descendant and Endo is Minahasa-Dutch/German descendants. Chinese came to Manado long time ago. Over 300 years a three teaching temple has established in town. They lived along with local communities as well as the Arab traders. Ban Hing Kiong locates in China town. Nearby is down town, Taman Kesatuan Bangsa. Close to it is the Oude Kirk or Old Church and 2nd World War Monument. In the southern area was set up a land mark, Jesus’s Blessing Monument. Near the bay is Malalayang beach. It is a perfect place to watch sunset with cup of local coffee and banana fritters served with chili souce. These are the place you will visit in Manado on North Sulawesi Tour.
